The meta tags that matter

Meta tags are instructions in the <head> of a page. Some influence how search engines understand the page; others influence how it looks in results and social feeds.

Title tag

The <title> is one of the strongest on-page signals and the headline of your search result.

  • 50–60 characters so it is not truncated.
  • Primary keyword first, brand last.
  • Unique per page.
  • Avoid keyword stuffing and clickbait.

Meta description

Not a ranking factor, but it is your ad copy in the results.

  • 140–160 characters.
  • Include the keyword and a clear benefit.
  • Add a call to action.
  • Unique per page.

Generate both with the meta tags generator.

Canonical tag

When several URLs show the same or similar content (parameters, print versions, http/https, www/non-www), the canonical names the preferred one:

<link rel="canonical" href="https://example.com/page">

Use the canonical URL generator. Never point canonicals at redirects or noindex pages.

Open Graph and Twitter Cards

These control how links look when shared, which drives social traffic:

<meta property="og:title" content="...">
<meta property="og:description" content="...">
<meta property="og:image" content="https://example.com/og.png">
<meta property="og:type" content="website">
<meta name="twitter:card" content="summary_large_image">

Build them with the Open Graph generator and Twitter card generator.

Other tags worth knowing

  • robots — noindex, nofollow, max-snippet, max-image-preview.
  • viewport — essential for mobile.
  • hreflang — for localized and regional versions.
  • theme-color — mobile browser UI colour.

Checklist

  • Unique title and description on every page
  • One self-referencing canonical per page
  • Open Graph and Twitter Card tags present
  • Correct language and hreflang where relevant
  • No accidental noindex
